What is MyQ Smart Garage Hub?
The MyQ Smart Garage Hub is a retrofit kit that turns your existing garage door opener into a smart garage door opener. The MyQ Hub is sold as a “Connectivity Kit”:
The MyQ Smart Garage Hub consists of hardware and software.
The hardware in the kit has two main elements:
- Internet Gateway – connects with your home Wi-Fi network
- Infrared sensors – detect objects that may be obstructing the garage door
The software is a smartphone app called the ‘MyQ Smart Garage & Access Control’, which you can download for free from either Google Play (Android) or the App Store (iPhone).
How To Use MyQ To Close Your Garage Door
The rest of this article shows you how to install the MyQ Connectivity Kit, how to connect it to the MyQ smartphone app, and how to set up a schedule that automatically closes your garage door every evening.
Step 1 – Install the MyQ Smart Hub hardware
The two infrared sensors need to be installed on either side of your garage door, no more than 100 mm off the ground:
The wires from the IR sensors then need to go back to the garage door opener located on your garage ceiling. I did this by running the wires along the back of the side rails and then across the garage ceiling to the garage door opener:
The wires from the two sensors then need to be twisted together and inserted into the correct slot on the back of the garage door opener:
You then need to plug the Internet Gateway into a wall socket and connect it to your Wi-Fi router using the ethernet cable provided:
When you see a solid green light on the Internet Gateway, it means the Gateway is connected to the Internet. You can then set up the MyQ smartphone app.
Step 2 – Set up the MyQ smartphone app
Now go to either Google Play or the App Store and download the MyQ App:
Then create an account for MyQ – you will need to provide an email address and create a password.
MyQ will then create a user profile and will send you a confirmation email with a link that you need to click on to complete the process.
Now go back into the app and click on the ‘plus’ sign to add a device.
On the next screen choose the device that you would like to set up. In our case, it is the ‘Internet Gateway’:
The app will then show you a list of what you need in order to complete the setup:
Check off all the items and then tap on the ‘I’m Ready’ button.
The next step will depend on what make and model of garage door opener you have. Follow the instructions for your make and model. Your MyQ app will now be connected to the MyQ hardware.
Next, give your garage door a name.
You will now see your garage door in the MyQ app. To open or close your garage door, just tap on the circle:
When your garage door is open, the circle will be solid blue:
You can check whether your garage door is open or closed anytime by opening the MyQ app.
Tap on the ‘History’ tab, and you’ll see a history of your garage door ‘open’ and ‘close’ times:
So that’s how to use MyQ to close your garage door.
Step 3 – Create a schedule to close your garage door
To ensure you never accidentally leave your garage door open all night, consider creating a schedule within the MyQ app. This way, you can use MyQ to close your garage door at a set time each evening.
To do this, tap on the three dots to the right of your garage door:
On the next screen, tap on ‘Schedules’:
Then tap on the ‘plus’ sign in the top right corner to add a schedule for your garage door:
Note that for security reasons, you can only set a schedule for closing the garage door, not for opening it.
Choose a day of the week and a time for your schedule:
You can also choose to have either an email or an SMS message sent to your phone every time your garage door is opened or closed:
And that’s it! That’s how to use MyQ to close your garage door, automatically every evening at the time you specified. If the garage door is already closed, the app will simply leave the door closed.
You can now relax in the knowledge that your garage door will never again be left open all night.
