One of the most popular smart home devices on the market is Ring, a video doorbell and security system. Meanwhile, Google Home is a popular voice assistant and a hub for managing smart home devices.
For homeowners who use both of these devices, the question arises: does Ring work with Google Home?
In this article, we’ll explore the answer to this question and delve into the compatibility and integration options between Ring and Google Home.
1. Does Ring Work With Google Home?
Does the Ring Doorbell work with Google Home?
Unfortunately, not. Until about 2021 you could add Ring Doorbell to Google Home and get limited functionality from the doorbell.
But in 2022, even that option has been removed.
So what are the alternatives to Ring Doorbell?
If you are already committed to the Google Home ecosystem, then your best option is to invest in a smart doorbell that is compatible with Google Home.
But before we get to the details, what is Ring Doorbell and what does it do?
2. What Is Ring Doorbell?
The Ring Doorbell is a smart doorbell made by Ring LLC, an Amazon-owned company that specializes in home security products that incorporate outdoor surveillance cameras.

Ring also hosts an app, Neighbors, that allows users to share captured footage and alert other users about incidents that have happened in their area.
The Ring Doorbell has a motion detector, a video camera, and two-way audio.
Business Wire reported last year that Ring is the biggest doorbell brand in the world, selling 1.7 million video doorbells globally in 2021.
3. The Ring Doorbell and Google Home
The Ring Doorbell is an Amazon product and because Amazon and Google are competitors in the smart home sector, the two companies have not made their products interoperable.
The result is that while the Ring Doorbell can be added as a device to Google Home (NB: this is no longer true – as of December 2022, there is no option to add Ring Doorbell to Google Home – see below), most of the doorbell’s functions will not work in Google Home.
Neither Google Home nor Google Nest Hub is capable of showing you real-time video from the Ring camera.
This is a major problem for most people, given that the main reason for getting a Ring Doorbell is the ability to remotely see who is on your doorstep.
Also, you won’t be able to use the microphone/speaker in the Ring device from within Google Home. In other words, you won’t be able to interact with your visitors.
However, you will get notifications when the Ring Doorbell detects motion outside your front door. But this is of limited value, given that you won’t be able to access the live video feed and see who it is outside your front door.
4. Adding Ring Doorbell To Google Home
By this time you might be wondering what’s the point of using a Ring Doorbell with Google Home, given that most of the features that make the doorbell a smart device are not usable in Google Home?
And I would agree – the Ring Doorbell is a great smart doorbell and much more affordable than other smart doorbells. But with all those smart features stripped away from it, there’s not much left that is useful.
Until recently you could still add Ring Doorbell to Google Home and use the doorbell with limited functionality. But even that option has now gone.
Users are reporting that both the ‘Link’ option and the ‘Send to Device’ button have now disappeared (in 2022). Here are some recent comments from frustrated users:
5. What To Do If You Have a Ring Doorbell and Google Home?
So if you own a Ring Doorbell and you use Google Home as your smart hub, what are your options?
If you wanted to keep using the Ring Doorbell, you could switch to the Alexa smart hub. But that seems like a big hassle (and an expensive one) just so you can keep using the Ring Doorbell.
A wiser option, in my opinion, would be to switch to another smart doorbell. There are plenty of smart doorbells out there that are as good, if not better than the Ring Doorbell.
The Ring Doorbell is certainly good value but it’s by no means the best smart doorbell out there. In recent reviews by Tom’s Guide, the New York Times, and PCMag, the Ring Doorbell was outranked by Nest, Wyze, Arlo, and Eufy:
- Nest Doorbell (battery)
- Wyze Video Doorbell Pro
- Eufy Video Doorbell Dual
- Ring Video Doorbell (2nd gen)
- Arlo Essential Video Doorbell Wired
- Eufy Security Video Doorbell 2K (Wired)
- Eufy Security Video Doorbell 2K (Battery-Powered)
- Google Nest Doorbell (Wired)
- Ring Video Doorbell Wired
- Ezviz DB1C Wi-Fi Video Doorbell
- RemoBell S
- Toucan Wireless Video Doorbell
- Wyze Video Doorbell Pro
- Arlo Essential Video Doorbell Wire-Free
- Ring Video Doorbell Pro 2 (2021)
Does Ring Work with Google Home?
Up until 2021 you could add the Ring Doorbell to Google Home and get limited functionality. But in 2022 even that option has been removed – you now cannot add a Ring Doorbell to Google Home.
If you already have a Ring Doorbell and you use Google Home as your smart hub, your best option would be to invest in a smart doorbell that is compatible with Google Home.
